Literary Monsters by Shadow, Sound, Spectacle

Part concert, part puppet show, part ghost story. This 45-minute multimedia performance reimagines classic literary monsters through queer, musical shadow theater. Join ensemble Shadow, Sound, Spectacle for a fresh perspective on the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Mary Shelley, Emily Dickinson, Anne Rice, and others, told through live music, shadow puppetry, video, and narrative. All are welcome, but recommended for adults and teens. Q&A to follow. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Newton Cultural Council, a local council that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the City of Newton.

Founded in 2023, Shadow, Sound, Spectacle unites three artists working at the intersection of puppetry, music, and storytelling. Jess Martin is a Western Massachusetts-based singer-songwriter and storyteller blending gothic folk, modern rock, and immersive performance. Amy West is a Boston-based puppeteer, writer, and musician who performs nationwide in puppet slams and builds custom puppets for stage and screen. Abby Hanna is a Pioneer Valley musician and YouTuber known for her emotionally honest acoustic songwriting and multi-instrumental fluency on guitar, bass, and drums.
