POSTPONED: New England Quilts and the Stories They Tell

This event has been postponed and will NOT meet on October 27. We are working on rescheduling this event, and we will post updated program information as soon as it is ready. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Quilts tell stories, and quilt history is full of myths and misinformation as well as heart-warming tales of service and tradition. Nearly every world culture that has cold weather uses quilted textiles – quilting is not just an American art. Pam Weeks weaves world history, women's history, industrial history, and just plain wonderful stories into her presentation. Participants are invited to bring one quilt for identification and/or story sharing. Prompted in part by the material culture at hand, the presenter may speak about fashion fads, the Colonial Revival, quilt making for Civil War soldiers, and anything else quilt-related she can squeeze in.

About the presenter: Quilts have been the focus for more than half of Pam Weeks' life. She started making quilts at the time of Bicentennial craft revival and by the mid-1980’s was designing her own work. In 1991 a class on reproducing antique quilts hooked Pam on quilt history. Her first book was published in 2011 on Civil War quilts made for soldiers; her second, Deeds Not Words in 2019; and Portable Patchwork was published in 2020. Two more books are in the works. As the Binney Family Curator of the New England Quilt Museum Pam works with quilters, collectors, institutions, and co-conspirators to plan exhibits and she continues research on the quilts in the museum's collection.
